The Faculty of Engineering, National Defence
University Malaysia are currently undertaking several research projects and has
several opening for Graduate Research Assistants who are interested to purse
their postgraduate studies (Masters or PhD) at National Defence University
Malaysia (NDUM).
Immediate Intake (from December 2014 to 2015)
The MSc/PhD proposed topics are as mentioned below:
The MSc/PhD proposed topics are as mentioned below:
1) A Parametric Study For The Efficient Design Of Deflector Blast Panels
Used In Armored Vehicle Underbelly
-Requirements: Knowledge of Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom (MDOF) Systems and
Modal Analysis , FEA, Mathlab programming and Design of Experiments
Synopsis: To study the deformation mechanism of an V Shaped Deflector plate
used to attenuate the blast shock wave towards the armored vehicle hull
section. A MDOF equation (vibration of multi-degree-of-freedom systems) shall
be derived from key parameters (e.g plate angle, type of materials,
explosive charge, stand-off distance, etc) and will be analytically modeled.
FE simulation will also be performed to predict the optimize parameter
configuration. Field blast testing will be conducted to verify and validate
the analytical and FE model. Using DOE, an empircal model can also be
developed and compared with the FE and analytical models.
2) Mechanical response of metallic honeycomb/ cellular sandwich panel
structures to shaped charge jet penetration
-Requirements: Knowledge in composite materials, FEA and Design of
Experiments
Synopsis: To develop a lightweight and thin hybrid composite materials
which possess high energy absorption and shock attentuation capabilities
for armored vehicle against IED. Hybrid composite can be either sandwich
honeycomb material or Functional Graded Materials or FGM (e.g celullar
materials). Mechanical testing ranges from static to high strain rate. FE
simulation or one dimensional analytical model will be used to predict the
optimum variables for shaped charge jet penetration.
Field blast testing will be conducted to verify and validate the
FE model. Using DOE, an empircal model can also be developed and compared
with the FE and analytical models.
3)Finite Element Modeling of Vehicle Occupant Response when subjected
to blast loading
-Requirements: Knowledge in instrumentation and sensors integration, FEA,
biomechanics/Design of Experiments
Synopsis: To investigate the armored vehicle crews response inside an
armored vehicle (during landmine/IED attack) from various sitting/location
(e.g driver seating, gunnery seating, trooper/passenger seat, standing
position). Assess the Injury Criterion (IC) based on acceleration induced
to the passenger using THUMS Human Model from blast wave.
Field blast testing will be conducted to verify and validate the FE model.
4) Development of an instrumented anthropomorphic dummy for the study of
ballistic and blast loadings
-Requirements: Knowledge in Labview/Mathlab/Simulink, instrumentation,
biomechanics and CNC
5) Blast analysis of V shaped metal barrier for vehicle underbelly
-Requirements:Knowledge in CATIA, FEA and Design of experiments
